Language Lessons for Upper Elementary and Junior High Students
Bards & Poets is a two-level comprehensive classical grammar and composition course for upper elementary and junior high students or as an introductory composition course in high school.
Composition lessons are based on the narrative exercise of the ancient progymnasmata and imitation of a classic narrative or poetry selection. Grammar lessons are applied to sentences from the narrative, including challenging sentence diagramming lessons. Lessons include studies in poetry, literary analysis, figures of speech, and figures of description.
Bards & Poets I is suitable for students 6th grade and up; Bards & Poets II is suitable for students 7th grade and up.

Flexible Timing
The timing of the lessons is flexible to suit a variety of student and classroom needs.
The twenty-eight lessons are subdivided into five sessions. Each level of Bards & Poets could be completed in as little as twenty-eight weeks or it could be stretched to twice that or more, depending on the needs of the student, classroom, or co-op.

Prose & Poetry—literary analysis: reading and comprehending the basic elements of a story or poem, including characters, setting, plot, point of view, and poetry scansion.
Language Logic—grammar and word usage: grammar lessons coordinated with Harvey’s Revised Grammar, vocabulary study, sentence diagramming, and dictation.
Eloquent Expression—style development: building copia (abundant and ready supply) of words and construction, paraphrasing, figures of speech, figures of description, and poetry rhyme and meter.
Classical Composition—imitation of a worthy literary model: outlining and retelling a narrative, summarizing, and employing the writing sequence (plan, write, revise).
Commonplace Book—a time-honored practice for writers of all ages: collecting and copying worthy literary selections.
Sentence Sense
Complete grammar, parsing, and sentence diagramming handbook and exercises keyed to Harvey’s Practical Grammar (or Harvey’s Revised Grammar) to accompany Bards & Poets.
